There are some potato cods that regularly come around when they know divers have come. (Others have better things to do). This one was really tame, obliging many photographs with the divers. I was, of course, in the unusual position of being a snorkeler, taking photos from above them.

This fish was intriguing. It had what looked like two pairs of bright orange barbs near its tail, that looked like four butterflies are stuck to it. Or four little hearts, if you scroll to the close up photo.
I don't know what fish this is, and I'm not even 100% sure the orange bits are part of it or not. If you know this fish, please comment.

As if to console me even more for not being able to scuba dive, a turtle came over to swim around with the fishes.

After being a snorkeler on a dive liveaboard, I went back to the reef on a day tour boat. As it was a day tour, the snorkeling/diving sites weren't very far from Cairns. But the coral reef was still gorgeous.

Can someone tell me what the strange wriggly thing is? It looks like it's hiding behind the coral, but the camouflage makes it look like the coral is extending a tentacle!

Open
The final dive site was Cod Hole. As far as the coral reef was concerned, it wasn't a great site. But potato cods come around regularly, and a few are particularly tame with divers, which is why it's on the itinerary.
Nonetheless, there were still some fishes that you normally find along sandy or rubble seabed. And I watched a pair of divers video an eel.
