Inspiring Insightful Travel

I found it sometimes awkward to walk from the railway station building to Dataran Merdeka. There were parts where the pedestrian path is incomplete.

Anyway, the path does follow a tunnel, whose walls were painted with a mural depicting the iconic moment when the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman, declared the peninsula’s independence from British rule. The image makes you hear in your head the iconic audio accompanying it, the word ‘Merdeka!’ declared thrice.

Walking towards downtown KL from Hotel Majestic.
Passing by the old railway station, the railway service headquarters, the old postal service headquarters, and Dayabumi complex - one of Malaysia’s oldest skyscrapers and designed with a floor plan shaped like an eight pointed star, a common motif in Andalusian golden age architecture - a multicultural, multifaith society that the founding fathers were inspired by.
These are among the only views of KL that have changed little, and remain iconic.

The iconic railway station offices of Kuala Lumpur is so much a backdrop of Malaysia’s capital, that even a local doesn’t really think about how it isn’t actually Malaysian architecture. Built by British architect A.B. Hubbock in the colonial period of Selangor (when Kuala Lumpur was part of Selangor), the dome-topped structure might be attributed to Mughal influence. Seeking a grand aesthetic that was also suited to hot tropical weather, the colonial architects often drew from the architecture they found in British India.

However, if you look closer, the railway headquarters building actually managed to cohesively consolidate a lot more architectural influences than that. Greek columns are mixed with Gothic balconies, combined with delicate Mughal domes and arches, as well as Moorish and Ottoman arches.

I’d normally be opposed to just throwing in everything you liked from architecture in different places into the same building. You’d normally get such gauche results. But somehow, it kinda works in this example.

Agritourism is now a travel niche. In Selangor, it’s driven by the nostalgia of first generation rural-urban migrants during Malaysia’s rapid urbanisation in the later part of the 20th century. Many found they missed the fields of their childhood, and now introduce their children (sometimes their urban spouses too) to the rural life of their youth. It’s a change from previous urbanisation waves, where the migrants used to consider city life inherently better than the life they left behind. #ricefields #paddyfields #selangor #ruraltourism #agritourism #nostalgia
