This tualang tree is the pride and joy of @danzecoresort . It was specifically preserved when Dan and Anim first developed the place. Today, the outdoor dining area is built on raised decking around the tree so that it is centre stage.

The tualang tree is among the tallest of rainforest trees. It grows a tall and straight trunk which is fairly smooth, which is why bees like to build their hives in its canopy. Their honey is called tualang honey, and can be sustainably harvested by climbing to the hives (nowadays with safer modern rappeling gear).

@puanha_nim swears that hornbills regularly fly across from the protected forest to perch in this tree, but as I was there during the rainy season, no hornbills came to pay a visit.

Villagers fish from the Tembeling river. This can be active fishing with nets and fishing rod, or passively with a baited water bottle which relies on the river current to make the bait seem lively. In the latter case, you know you’ve caught a fish when the plastic water bottle flips upright, indicating a weight beneath.

It’s not very safe to go fishing in the flood, since the current can be very strong. But, there *are* more fish, tired from swimming in the same flood current.

This scene is from just before the flood, though I did see one intrepid soul out on his boat a few days after the floods first rose.

Bukit Awan, looking out to Taman Negara rainforest.

Actually, sunrise is supposed to be the best time to be here, but we couldn’t be bothered. But if we did, there’s a higher likelihood of seeing the cloud scenery that give its name “Cloud Hill”.

@puanha_nim says that there are hidden gem nature attractions in these upriver villages popular with locals, but I get the feeling that it’s not easy to visit as a tour; rather it’s more reachable for slow travelers.

Located in Perhentian Marine Park, @alunanresort doesn’t supply guests with plastic bottled water. But there are many filtered water refill stations there, and if you don’t have your own water bottle, don’t worry - they’ll lend you one.

It’s not easy to go through the daily motions, when you’re aware of the things that go on in the world, particularly during pivotal moments that you know render them trivial by comparison. And especially if you’re also down with a cold as well…

Still, these days, I’m finding numerous teachable moments to educate people particularly in my country, on the hidden and true ugly sides of why there are SDG imbalances. Appropriately for the season, the veil preventing us from perceiving the hidden things is thin, and it becomes easier to show people where to look. Learning happens faster in such times.

But that is something I do on other channels, not here.

As I once posted before, on this channel I prioritise real world human geography, especially those examples when people have managed to get it right.

It doesn’t mean I don’t know of the full extent of how broken all 17 SDGs are - I can give classes on that. But partitioning is a useful skill, perhaps even a necessary one.

That’s all I’ll post today.

Re-visiting Kampung Nelayan in Perhentian Islands, where I had once volunteered with the Blue Temple (now @perhentian_marine_research). ofc had to show my face and say hi to the @ecoteer.perhentianproject too, and the mixed rice lady at the waterfront.

The village looks nicer now. The once barren area between the shops and the food court complex is now shaded with trees. There are electric scooters now. And for some reason, a clam sculpture near the welcome arch.

@alunanresort is on Petani beach at the south part of Perhentian Kecil island. Personally, I think it’s probably the best spot in the #Perhentians.

The sandbank down by the river where @danzecoresort guests go for stargazing and volleyball changes shape every so often, with a high enough flood. The river rose all the way up to the bottom of the steps leading up to the main resort area, and when it recedes again, it will leave a different sandbank.

There are many rivers in this interior region of the Pahang river basin, which all flood and ebb at different tempos, depending on where the rain happens to fall in the catchment throughout the monsoon season. This means that the Tembeling river stays high, even if the initial streams that flooded have receded, since other streams flowing into it may be flooding instead. And when the Tembeling stays high, the roads going out to Jerantut stay impassable around the Padang Piol area. This phenomenon is called “air termenung” or the “pensive water”, which evokes the image of the floodwater kind of pensively idling and staring into space. It only tends to improve when the full moon wanes and the rains ease, so that the excess water can drain into the sea again.

I didn’t know this before going. But my contingency plan of choosing to stay with a local hospitality operator (and also my friend), is meant to cover these unknowns of being in a flood-prone area near flood season. So, while it did mean I was marooned beyond my intended holiday duration, I knew I would be with people who already knew how to handle the situation. Whereas, guests who stayed at more corporate resorts, whose owners are not local to the area, had to evacuate their accommodations because those resorts typically chose to close to avoid risking corporate liability. And since they were marooned the same as everyone else, they had to figure out their own alternative accommodations.
