It was simultaneously interesting but also somewhat irritating, to discover that the floodwaters remain elevated even when the weather turned fine in Taman Negara. But we decided to go for a short hike around the area, particularly since by then my dire need to recover my fitness after the movement control period became obvious to me. 😅

We came upon a nearby Bateq village, which was abandoned when the floods rose. And we stopped by a spot where my friend thought he might construct a vieweing tower where people could chill and have a small picnic. On the way back, we met a Bateq man out hunting, and stopped for a chat.

Villagers fish from the Tembeling river. This can be active fishing with nets and fishing rod, or passively with a baited water bottle which relies on the river current to make the bait seem lively. In the latter case, you know you’ve caught a fish when the plastic water bottle flips upright, indicating a weight beneath.

It’s not very safe to go fishing in the flood, since the current can be very strong. But, there *are* more fish, tired from swimming in the same flood current.

This scene is from just before the flood, though I did see one intrepid soul out on his boat a few days after the floods first rose.

This was the first real hike I did after pandemic movement controls. It was brutal. 😵 I had extra weight some call “fat” that feels like carrying around a weight belt and I was much less agile than my mind knows how to deal with.
Even the jungle guide shared that his fitness was shot, but not because of inactivity. He survived being infected by the virus (caught it before there was a vaccine) and it damaged his lung capacity. He also temporarily lost his sense of smell, and grateful he was among those who got it back.

The streams began to recede from roads in the Kuala Tahan area, though the road out was still under water. The day was fine, so my friends decided it would be a good idea to take me on a drive along the new roads to the upriver villages.

What’s valued in rural communities is often very different from urban ones, and the engineers who build and maintain public infrastructure outside the urban regions are proud of different things. There are still places in Malaysia where basic infrastructure engineering is still a source of pride for these professionals, because it means that villages are now connected by good roads, when only one generation ago children (like my friend) had to go to school on river barges through the jungle. #sdg9

It’s hard to talk about climate and biodiversity when you’re from a place that takes such things for granted, to people who have only just gotten to enjoy the same, or are still aspiring for such basic access.

But I did talk about the new electric pickups now on the market - though I mostly highlighted its potential advantage in the monsoon season, seeing as the interior still had electricity even when the way was blocked to the nearest petrol station, rather than its low emissions aspect.

The water of the Tahan river is not murky, but it’s not clear either. There’s a bronze tint to it, and if you manage to be there in the golden hour and the light hits it right, it seems to glow. I’ve only seen it once; not on this particular trip since it was near the monsoon and the sky was overcast. Plus the tour was not early in the morning so the golden hour was over.
The reason for the bronze stain is the tannin from the decomposing trees, which have fallen into the river over time.

The water was high in the Tahan river the last time I was in Taman Negara. You might say it was perhaps a little risky to go so close to the onset of the monsoon season. But it was only near the turn of the season so we thought maybe we’d just miss it. Little did we know that this was gonna be the year when large swathes of the Malaysian peninsula would flood in the worst flooding event in living memory.
