I found it sometimes awkward to walk from the railway station building to Dataran Merdeka. There were parts where the pedestrian path is incomplete.

Anyway, the path does follow a tunnel, whose walls were painted with a mural depicting the iconic moment when the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman, declared the peninsula’s independence from British rule. The image makes you hear in your head the iconic audio accompanying it, the word ‘Merdeka!’ declared thrice.

After being a snorkeler on a dive liveaboard, I went back to the reef on a day tour boat. As it was a day tour, the snorkeling/diving sites weren`t very far from Cairns. But the coral reef was still gorgeous.

Tioman Island is quite different from other islands off Malaysia’s peninsular east coast. For example, you don’t normally come by speedboat and land at a small jetty or pontoon (or beach on sand). Normally, you’d arrive by ferry, which arrives at a proper albeit small ferry terminal, complete with an inner canal where small boats could be parked in calm water. There was a bridge crossing it to the main village of Tioman, Kampung Tekek, which had an almost small town bustle.

The local transport of choice is a motorbike with a sidecart, transporting everything from goods to luggage and even people.

For another, although there are tourist resorts on Tioman, the lay of the island prioritises the local islanders’ activities rather than primarily facilitating the tourists, which adds further to the small town feeling. This makes Tioman the best island in Malaysia for a longer island stay within a local village, since there are a lot of chalet stay options within the main villages.

Living within the normal bustle of village life, with everything within walking distance, it is thus easy to enter the local pace if you wish. It’s a particularly unique aspect of Tioman, and I have no idea how it managed to remain so despite the island’s perennial popularity.

That doesn’t mean that there hasn’t been a perpetual corporate interest in turning Tioman into just another resort-dominant island. But there isn’t another tourist island in Malaysia like Tioman, and I certainly hope the authorities aren’t foolish enough to sacrifice that.

I remember taking this photo in April 2020 because it was such a mood. Malaysia had gone into pandemic lockdown at the time (formally called Movement Control), and I had chosen to lock down in my own condo in the heart of KL.

I learned a lot then, about how I respond to disasters and emergencies.

I think I changed gears very well, managing to stay safe while keeping my personal values, and I changed back to normal life fairly well too.
