Very informative article! I am huge on sunscreen but try to read labels!

Thank you! I’m relatively tolerant of small risks of this or that ingredient, ultimately they’re negligible compared to the risks of lifestyle choices. But this one does matter; maybe not for us, but for corals.

It seems it’s really important to use reef-safe sunscreen! Thanks for sharing this!

I got my master’s degree in sustainable tourism, so this topic is close to my heart. I enjoyed reading everything here!

As usual this is a great article, well researched and thoughtful. I will definitely take more note of the sunscreen I use as I too am a scuba diver and love spending time in the sea when I am near one.

  5. Wow! I had no idea that certain sunscreens could be toxic to the reefs. As an avid scuba diver, the thought that I might have unknowingly contributed to damaging my favourite reefs leaves me feeling sick to my stomach.
Thank you for making me aware of this – I’m off to read the ingredients on my sunscreen.

The sunscreens used to be titanium dioxide and zinc oxide by default, as I recall. Then at some point, they started making the new formulations. I think it’s supposed to blend better in the skin so you’ll still look great in photos. The idea was to encourage people to wear them – it was that time when skin cancer was the public scare of the day, if you remember. That’s when I personally noticed it getting harder to find the old ones. Didn’t think too much of it, as I didn’t realise what this meant for the corals. If you’re Gen X or older, the switch was actually fairly recent.
