This scenic railway trip sounds so cool. What. Great way to see the landscape roll by!

  2. Now, that is what I call a desirable train ride. Thank you for sharing this. I loved reading about it.

Such a lovely sounding trip to do! I have been hoping to get to Australia from New Zealand, and only have a few weeks left for that to happen this trip, so we shall see. If I do, and have time, this will be on my list!

  4. I had never heard of this UNESCO Heritage site before nor the train trip, but it looks like a fantastic day trip. Thanks for sharing!

I think usually people go to Daintree to experience the Wet Tropics UNESCO site. But the area is bigger than just the Daintree portion, actually.

  5. I would do this just for the train trip but of course, it looks lovely once you get there too. Over 20 years ago I visited Cairns, did a 3-day liveaboard on the Great Barrier Reef, and spent a couple of nights in the Daintree Forest. I don’t remember hearing about this back then, but I’d certainly make an effort to go if I went now, if not just for the train ride through the rainforest.

Indeed. For me, the railway itself was more interesting than the village, because of its history and remarkable engineering. Hence, why this article is mostly about the Scenic Railway part!

A fabulous read about a trip I nearly did but run out of time in OZ. Now I have seen it in so much detail I wish I had made time as it looks like a fabulous train ride. Maybe next time!

Taking the train from Cairns to Kuranda is definitely one of my most favoured experiences (having lived in FNQ). A very through post, and thank you for the memories. 😊

Kuranda railway ride looks so exciting.Would love to visit it.

    • Teja says:

LOL ok so… ‘exciting’ isn’t really how I’d describe it. You see, the train actually doesn’t go so very fast as it’s pretty old – which is a plus, since this way you can enjoy the scenery of the rainforest gorge. I’d say this is a good trip to give yourself a slow day within your Cairns trip.

The Kuranda Scenic Railway looks like a great day trip with beautiful scenery. Definitely one for my bucket list.

    • Teja says:

Yes, it is! But, in the interest of strict honesty, unless you’re really into collecting train experiences around the world or something niche like that, I wouldn’t quite elevate it to bucket list level!

This is a really thorough guide & it will definitely make me pay a visit to Kuranda next time I am in that part of Australia. I would also like to take the cable car one way as this looks lots of fun too.

This brought back some good memories. I was in Kuranda in 2010. It sounds as if it’s been developed a lot since then which is not surprising. We took the skyrail up, and one of the best things we did was the butterfly enclosure. The train sounds like fun.

    • Teja says:

Yes, I think the train is worth doing once. It must have been quite different 10 years back! I heard the ‘original’ market, the one on the hillside, was the only one back in the day.

  12. Heather says:

I was in Cairns 20 years ago and never even knew this was there! Looks amazing! Will have to add it to the list for next time I go.

    • Teja says:

I had the sense that way back when, Kuranda was maybe an ‘offbeat’ destination, for the hippie markets. Maybe it wouldn’t have been prominent for tourism 20 years ago. Now it looks a bit touristy.
