The Houseboat Life at Dal Lake – Was It Dull?

View through a wooden bridge frame along a mountain creek in Kashmir. River rocks line the banks and tall conifer trees flank sides of the narrow creek. The bridge frame forms a V in the foreground. 14

Inspiring Insightful Travel

The main irrigation canals of Sungai Besar often create perfect mirror reflections. The water is still, but there’s another secret to it. Aquatic plants grow thickly underwater, right up to the water surface, further baffling any disturbance. It reminded me of Dal and Nigeen Lakes in Kashmir.

Unlike those lakes though, the canals didn’t seem eutrophic. Perhaps it’s because the water is allowed to flow periodically through the canal locks, and so stays relatively aerated?

Walking around the near-empty streets of Downtown KL during the slightly relaxed movement control period in August 2020. I don’t really come to this part of the city, and only just discovered the train-themed street exibit at the Masjid Jamek LRT station!

You will see these cartoon figures around the KL downtown area. The distributed street exhibits honour the work of the great Malaysian cartoonist Lat, who prolifically drew Malaysian society in the period of the new country’s identity formation, with a humour style that is a a mix of empathy, resilience, an appreciation of the banal, gentle criticism, and acceptance.

The characters represent ordinary folk, particularly from the early decades of Malaysia’s independence.

The final image is the character avatar of Lat himself, on a bicycle with his father. This is a callback to his iconic work, Kampung Boy, which reminisces his experience living through Malaysia’s independence as a rural-to-town boy in the state of Perak.

The two big murals next to the River of Life in downtown KL. Scroll to see them both close up.

Not a lot of shops were open in the initial lull of the Covid19 outbreak. But the Gloria Jean’s was open, and I had brunch there. From the cafe, I could see both murals across the Klang river.

It’s a sight I’ve noted, passing through by car. But I’ve never stopped to linger, since parking is a nightmare in the area. Downtown is a place better visited by public transport.

A panel from a series of murals on the side of OCBC Bank. Depicting the flow of money facilitated by infrastructure around Kuala Lumpur (?). I’m not sure what the Pacman eating the money represents. Profit-taking? The money flow feeds people?

[long caption] Bagan Nakhoda Omar is the local hangout in Sabak Bernam. People in the area simply refer to it as “BNO”, confidently assuming the acronym is universally understood. Alas, I’m only from KL, and didn’t understand. But it was interesting to have the shoe on the other foot.

BNO is a modest beachfront on a shellfish coastline. There was a small restaurant and ample parking, a little children’s play area and despite the early days after movement control was relaxed, already a small stall selling beach accessories.

The sandy part of the beach stretched flat for some distance; one must be mindful of the tide on such shores. In the distance there was someone digging for mentarang in the beach, a kind of local clam akin to a razor clam.
